Repair or Replace? How to Tell If Your Old Computer Is Worth Fixing
When a computer starts playing up, the first question most people ask is whether it is worth fixing. The honest answer is that it depends on how old the computer is, what is actually wrong, and what you need it to do.
Some of our most satisfying jobs are six-year-old laptops that feel new again after a modest upgrade. Other times, the repair money is better put towards something new. This guide covers the questions we ask before recommending either.
Start with three questions
- How old is it? As a rough guide, a computer under four years old is usually worth repairing. Between four and seven years, it depends on the fault. Over seven years, replacement often makes more sense, especially if it cannot run Windows 11.
- What is actually wrong? Some faults are common and inexpensive to fix. Others cost nearly as much as a new machine.
- What do you need it to do? Email, browsing and video calls need far less power than photo editing, running a business or keeping dozens of browser tabs open.
Problems that are usually worth fixing
- Slow to start and sluggish to use. Very often the cause is an old spinning hard drive. Swapping it for a solid-state drive, sometimes with extra memory, can transform an older computer. See our laptop and PC upgrades service.
- Pop-ups, strange toolbars or a hijacked browser. These are usually software problems that can be cleaned up. Our virus and malware removal service covers this.
- A cracked screen on a newer laptop. Replacement screens are available for most popular models.
- A battery that no longer holds a charge. A new battery is far cheaper than a new laptop.
- Overheating or a noisy fan. Often just years of built-up dust.
- A broken keyboard or charging port. Usually repairable.
- Windows errors and failed updates. Frequently fixable without touching the hardware.
Problems that often point to replacement
- Motherboard failure on an older machine. The part and labour can approach the cost of a replacement.
- Liquid damage. This can go either way. If it happens, turn the computer off straight away, do not charge it, and get it checked before trying to switch it back on.
- Several faults at once. Fixing one thing on a tired computer often reveals the next.
- It cannot run Windows 11. Free security updates for Windows 10 now run until 12 October 2027, so you have time, but you will need a plan. Our guide to your Windows 10 options explains what to do.
- The repair costs more than about half the price of a comparable replacement. This is a useful rule of thumb rather than a hard line.
Do not forget the data
Whatever you decide, the photos, documents and emails on a computer usually matter more than the computer itself. Warning signs of a failing drive include clicking sounds, extreme slowness, files that will not open, and repeated error messages. If you notice these, stop using the computer and get help, because every extra hour of use can make recovery harder.
Our data recovery and backup service can often retrieve files from computers that will not start. To avoid needing it, read our guide on how to back up your photos.
The middle option: upgrade
Upgrading sits between repair and replacement. Desktop computers are usually easy to upgrade. Laptops vary: some allow new drives and memory, while others have parts permanently fixed to the main board. A technician can tell you in a few minutes what your model allows and whether the upgrade is worth it.
If you do replace it
- Consider refurbished. A refurbished business-grade computer with a warranty can be excellent value. Browse our new and refurbished computers.
- Buy for what you actually do. You do not need a gaming computer to send email and look at photos.
- Plan the move. Files, email, passwords and programs all need to come across. Our new device setup service handles this.
- Dispose of the old one responsibly. Wipe the drive first. In Victoria, e-waste cannot go in household rubbish, so take old computers to a council e-waste drop-off or recycling program.
Quick answers
Is it worth putting a solid-state drive in an old laptop?
Often, yes. If the laptop is in otherwise good condition and under about seven years old, a solid-state drive is one of the most cost-effective upgrades there is.
How long should a computer last?
Many home computers give five to seven years of good service with reasonable care. Business machines that work harder may need replacing sooner.
Can you recover files from a computer that will not turn on?
Often, yes. As long as the drive itself is not badly damaged, files can usually be copied off and moved to a new computer.
