Laptop & PC Upgrades: Fix a Slow Computer Without Buying New
If your computer has become painfully slow, you often don't need a new one. A quick on-site upgrade can make an older laptop or PC feel brand new — for a fraction of the cost of replacing it.
The real reason your computer is slow
Most people assume a slow computer is worn out. Usually it isn't — it's held back by one or two components that are easy and affordable to upgrade. We diagnose the real bottleneck on-site and tell you honestly whether an upgrade is worth it or whether you'd be better off replacing the machine.
SSD upgrades — the single biggest speed boost
Swapping an old mechanical hard drive for a solid-state drive (SSD) is the most dramatic upgrade there is. A machine that took two or three minutes to start can boot in under twenty seconds afterwards, and everything feels instant. We clone your existing system across so nothing is lost, and you keep all your files, programs and settings.
More RAM (memory)
If your computer slows to a crawl once you open a few programs or browser tabs, it may simply be short on memory. We'll advise how much you actually need — 8GB is fine for everyday use, 16GB for heavier multitasking — and fit it on the spot.
Battery and screen replacement
A battery that won't hold charge, shuts down unexpectedly, or has started to swell should be replaced promptly. We also replace cracked screens, dead pixels and flickering displays on most laptops.
Upgrade or replace?
An honest recommendation. As a rough guide, a computer under about five years old is usually worth upgrading. Older machines, or ones with multiple failing parts, may be better replaced — and we'll tell you plainly which camp yours is in. If it's time for a new one, we can set that up for you too.
Upgrade FAQs
How much RAM do I need?
For email, web browsing and documents, 8GB is plenty. If you keep lots of tabs and programs open, or edit photos and video, 16GB makes a real difference. We'll check what your machine supports and recommend accordingly.
Will I lose my files?
No. When we fit an SSD we clone your existing drive across, so your files, programs and settings all come with you.
How long does an upgrade take?
Most upgrades are done on-site in 45 to 90 minutes, including transferring your data across.
